Westside Urban Market co-owner Katie Walker is having a photo show “Somewhere Between Point A and Point B” at the gallery at 999 Peachtree as part of Atlanta Celebrates photography. Opening reception is October 14!
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN POINT A AND POINT B is comprised of three distinct collections of images by photographer Kathleen Walker where a place, journey, or story seems to be captured in midstream. A quiet pause resonates throughout the works allowing the viewer to stop and soak up an in between moment — pondering location, personal history or human action that may have led to a certain point in time. Suspended somewhere between “before” and “after” or “here” and “there”, the pieces seem to ask that we thoughtfully notice the small moments, the turning points, the intersections and the natural beauty that impact us along the way.
SERIES DESCRIPTIONS:
Still – A series of images of a person(s) in an environment where their presence
is caught between the action that got them there and the action they may or may not take next. One wonders where they’ve been, what brought them to this point or place, and what will happen in the moments ahead. The small proportion of the individual to the greater, wide open landscape further highlights the idea of solitude and the occupation of a middle space.
Plains - A series of images of barns and their surrounding landscapes captured along Highway 23 between Georgia & Michigan. Walker, a Michigan-born Georgia resident, set out on this nostalgic journey with expectations of time worn barns and the rough and tumble life of the hard-working farmer. But things
shifted somewhere along the way from country patina to perfectly pristine. Graphic grids, beautiful architecture and linear landscapes soon created a peaceful mood and clarity that seemed to emanate from the land.
West Paces – A series of images taken at the beginning of the West Paces Hospital demolition. After 27 years, the West Paces Ferry Hospital was closed in 1999 and was demolished in 2010. With 294 beds and 280 registered nurses, West Paces was once a thriving, living and healing place. The images in this series seem to reflect both the life the building once had as well as its imminent passing. The viewer is caught between the still colorful joy of what appear to be the rooms of the maternity ward and the pending collapse of this Atlanta institution.
